Our Story:
A Personal Journey to Ski Safety
In the 90s, on a beautiful, sunny day, I was enjoying what should have been an ordinary day on the slopes. But from the chairlift, I heard a desperate cry for help. Looking down, I saw a snowboarder standing over a motionless figure, a pool of blood spreading beneath them. Time seemed to slow as I realized someone was dying right in front of me.
When I reached the top, I rushed to the ski patrol and led them to the tragic scene. It was one of their own—a beloved ski patroller—who had lost his life after a snowboarder crashed into him, sending him into a tree. The shock of that moment stayed with me, and I stopped skiing that day, not returning to the slopes for the next 20 years.
A few years ago, encouraged by a friend, I finally made my way back to skiing. It felt like rediscovering an old love, but I quickly became aware of the new dangers: overcrowded slopes, aggressive snowboarders, and skiers who seemed unaware of the risks they posed to others. The joy of skiing was there, but safety was missing.
Two years ago, I started skiing with my poles held parallel to the ground, instinctively creating a boundary around myself for protection. It was a simple gesture, but it sparked an idea in my husband, who is an engineer. Together, we developed the Ski Guardian®—a device equipped with flexible rods and flags that create a visible safety perimeter around the skier.

We’ve spoken with ski patrollers across the U.S. and Canada who believe Ski Guardian® can reduce the risk of injuries and even save lives. Like helmets, which were once rare but are now essential, we believe Ski Guardian® can become a common safety measure for skiers of all ages.
At first, I resisted wearing a helmet when I returned to skiing, but now I wouldn’t dream of skiing without both my helmet and my Ski Guardian®. It gives me the peace of mind that I can enjoy the sport I love with an added layer of protection.
